Before You Move

Before You Move

Address: You can go to moversguide.usps.com to change your address and more.
Voter registration: Requirements vary by state, so visit usa.gov/register-to-vote for information.
Vehicle documents: States require different documentation. Go to usa.gov/motor-vehicle-services to find your DMV.

Be Aware… there are companies that will change your address for a fee; however, they are not affiliated with the Postal Service.

Selecting a Mover

Choose a mover that:

  • Gives you a written estimate with:
    • Time
    • Number of movers needed
    • Amount of rooms you have
    • What the company is packing
    • Number of boxes/containers
  • Doesn’t expect cash up front.
  • Has insurance to protect your goods.
  • Is registered with the government.
  • Has a local, physical address.
  • Conducts an onsite inspection of what you are moving.

In addition, check with your local or state consumer affairs department or search the bbb.org site for complaints.

A good resource is the Protect Your Move site from The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Visit fmcsa.dot.gov/protect-your-move for help before, during, and after your move.
